Man Killed in Jurupa Valley Police Shooting

Authorities Claim Man Was Swinging Hammer Prior to Fatal Police Shooting at Home on Collins Street in Jurupa Valley

JURUPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA (June 26, 2026) – A man has tragically died in a Jurupa Valley police shooting at a home along Collins Street.

Riverside County officials are saying that the incident occurred at 4:20 p.m. on Monday. Authorities received a call that a woman was screaming in the area.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they encountered a man who was allegedly advancing towards them while swinging a hammer. Authorities say they issued commands for the man to drop the hammer shortly before opening fire.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the shooting to help him. He was transported to a local area hospital in critical condition.

Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities conducted a search in the area, but they were not able to locate the woman at the center of their initial response.

A full investigation remains ongoing.

Liability for Jurupa Valley Police Shootings

The ability to use lethal force is one of the most consequential powers that police officers hold. Evaluating liability for any specific use of force will typically come down to whether or not a police officer’s actions were objectively reasonable or excessive under the Fourth Amendment. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. There are many ways that a police officer may have acted negligently prior to shooting any person.

  • Police officers may have issued contradictory commands.
  • Police officers may have rushed into an encounter and failed to take any efforts to de-escalate.
  • Police officers may not have used less-lethal options that would have been sufficient given the situation.

A large portion of fatal police shootings involve officers who were dealing with someone in the midst of a serious mental health crisis. There are specific safety rules that officers must follow in the event they are dealing with a person struggling with their mental health. When officers fail to follow a safety rule promulgated by their employer, this could serve as evidence of negligence.

Steps to Take After Jurupa Valley Police Shootings

Riverside County law enforcement agencies have faced numerous lawsuits over allegations of excessive force. According to KESQ, “From 2010 to 2020, Riverside County paid out $77 million, according to the investigation, including $63 million for excessive force cases and $12 million for false arrests.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any police shooting.

  • Body camera footage from responding officers should be reviewed.
  • Any person who may have witnessed the shooting should be interviewed.
  • Medical records related to injuries should be collected.
  • The family of any person killed in a police shooting should consider their legal options with a team experienced in civil rights claims.

It can be hard to know where to begin after losing a loved one in a police shooting. Grief is often made worse by a lack of transparency from the agency responsible for the death. When police departments investigate themselves, they will virtually never accept responsibility for what happened. The family of any person who died in a police shooting is able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
