SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA (June 15, 2026) – A 16-year-old was shot and killed at a Sana Ana apartment complex along the 3400 block of Main Street.

The Santa Ana Police Department said that the accident took place at around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday. A 53-year-old man called 911 and told police that his girlfriend’s 16-year-old son stabbed him with a knife.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the 16-year-old was allegedly still armed with some type of knife. The teenager allegedly did not put the knife down before being shot by the police.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the shooting to help the injured boy. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man who contacted the police was reportedly taken to the hospital and has been listed in stable condition. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Santa Ana Police Shootings

The ability to use lethal force is one of the most consequential powers that police officers hold. It must be used with great discretion and care for the sanctity of life of all persons that an officer encounters. A police officer can be liable for excessive force through 42 U.S. Code § 1983. There are many ways that a police officer may have used excessive force in the context of any police shooting.

  • Police officers may have shot an unarmed suspect who did not pose a threat of harm to themselves or the public.
  • Police officers may have failed to follow a protocol related to dealing with someone in the midst of a mental health crisis.
  • Police officers may have shot a fleeing suspect who did not pose an immediate threat to themselves or the public.
  • Police officers may have mistaken an ordinary object like a cellphone for a weapon.

A police department could also be liable for a shooting through a Monell claim. This type of claim is based on the court case Monell v. Department of Social Services. In a Monell claim, a police department can be liable for a police shooting or another instance of excessive force if the incident was the consequence of poor training or repeated failures to discipline problematic officers. In other words, a police department’s own practices or policies must have contributed to the incident in some way.

Preventing Santa Ana Police Shootings

Police shootings remain far too common across California. According to the Public Police Institute of California, “About 195 people die each year from interactions with California law enforcement. Gunshots are by far the most common cause of death: nearly 250 people are shot by police each year.” Police departments across California should take many actions to prevent fatal shootings.

  • Police officers should be equipped with tasers and other less-lethal options.
  • Police officers should be trained to deal with situations where a person may be under the influence or in the midst of a mental health crisis.
  • Police departments should ensure that their offices follow a use-of-force continuum where lethal force is always a measure of last resort.
  • Police departments should always hold their officers accountable for any incident of misconduct.

Police shootings tend to be very preventable in many different situations. They tend to involve police officers that are either unwilling or unable to de-escalate encounters. Police departments in Orange County and Los Angeles County have garnered particularly poor reputations. Departments in these counties have continued to be the subject of civil rights complaints and lawsuits. The family of any person killed due to the excessive force of police officers may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action.
