Woman Accused Of Attacking People With Metal Pipe Killed In Taranza Police Shooting

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (July 11, 2023) – A woman who allegedly assaulted people with a metal pipe was killed in a Taranza police shooting by Reseda Boulevard and Hatteras Street.

Los Angeles Police Department officials are saying that the incident took place around 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Police officers arrived at the scene after getting several reports of assaults in the area.

Officers encountered a woman near a gas station parking lot. Police said that they deployed a taser and a “40mm foam baton round.” But these tactics did not appear to be effective.

Police officers opened fire and shot the woman. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help her. She was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

A full investigation into the Taranza police shooting remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Taranza Police Shootings

Far too many people are killed or seriously injured every year following encounters with the LAPD. According to reporting by the Los Angeles Times, “LAPD officers shot 27 people, killing seven, in all of 2020, and shot 26 people, killing 12, in 2019, The Times reported. Officers shot 33 people in 2018.” Roughly a third of the people fatally shot by the LAPD were suffering from a serious mental illness. There are a number of steps that police departments should take to reduce the likelihood of fatal encounters with suspects.

  • Police officers should be trained to understand when a suspect is having a mental health crisis.
  • Police officers should follow protocol for dealing with mentally ill suspects.
  • Police officers should issue clear commands to suspects before using force.
  • Police officers should be equipped with less-lethal alternatives to service pistols.

Police officers are required to use the least amount of force necessary to get suspects to comply with their demands. When a police officer uses excessive force, this is a violation of a suspect’s rights afforded by the constitution. Excessive force refers to any level of force that exceeds what a police officer reasonably believes is necessary. As outlined in California Assembly Bill No. 392, whether or not an officer’s use of deadly force is reasonable will depend on the “totality of the circumstances” leading up to a fatal encounter. There are many steps that should be taken after a police shooting.

  • The actions of all police officers leading up to the shooting should be reviewed.
  • Body camera footage from all officers involved should be sought.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • A civil rights attorney should be contacted.

Many police shootings are totally preventable. They tend to involve officers that are not properly trained or who are not following police protocol. The LAPD, in particular, has a very poor track record in this regard. Family members of any person killed in a police shooting may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a constitutional claim. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
