Semi-Truck Driver Arrested for DUI Following Deadly Crash on the 10 Freeway in Ontario

ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA (October 22, 2025) – Three people tragically died in a multi-vehicle collision involving several tractor-trailer trucks on the 10 Freeway in Ontario.
San Bernardino County officials are saying that the collision occurred around 1:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon. A witness to the collision said that he saw a red truck speed down the freeway in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
The truck apparently didn’t even attempt to slow down before crashing into two other vehicles. The force of the collision caused a huge fireball.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victims. Sadly, three people died due to the severe nature of their injuries.
Two other people were hospitalized with serious injuries. Authorities have arrested the semi-truck driver involved in the crash on suspicion of DUI.
A full investigation into the Ontario truck accident remains ongoing.
Liability for Ontario Semi-Truck Accidents
Truck drivers must obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate their vehicles with an abundance of caution at all times. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” There are many factors that could contribute to any truck accident.
- Fatigue: Truck drivers are often asked to work long hours at all times of the day. They may become fatigued during the course of those extended routes.
- Driver Intoxication: Though relatively rare, many truck accidents have been caused by intoxicated drivers. What many truck drivers do not realize is that a variety of substances besides alcohol could impair them. This includes over-the-counter medication.
- Inclement Weather: Driving a commercial truck can be difficult in the best of circumstances. Many drivers lack the experience to operate large trucks safely in all of the hazardous weather and traffic conditions they encounter.
There is simply no reason for a truck to ever rear-end a vehicle in their own lane of traffic. These types of accidents are nearly always the result of truck drivers that were either speeding or following too closely to the vehicle ahead of them. If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid a collision, their employer could be held at fault. As a general rule, employers can be held vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their workers operating within the course of their job duties.
Steps to Take After Ontario Semi-Truck Accidents
Fatigue and intoxicants can dramatically impair a truck driver’s ability to operate their vehicle safely. According to one study in MDPI, “Fatigue, alcohol, and drug can affect human brains and other parts of the nervous system and, thus, slow down a person’s activity or responsiveness. Therefore, truck drivers’ reactions and decision-making can be greatly affected if they are under the influence of these factors, leading to risky driving situations.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any truck accident.
- Police Report: The police should be called to the scene as early as possible so that they can begin an investigation.
- Eyewitnesses: The contact information of eyewitnesses should be collected so that their observations can be properly documented.
- Physical Evidence: The physical evidence associated with the crash should be carefully examined. This includes the event data recorder (EDR) of any semi-truck involved in a collision.
- Legal Review: Truck accidents should be carefully reviewed by a team with experience in injury claims. They can take steps to ensure that the rights of victims are being protected.
It can be difficult to know where to begin after any truck accident. Victims are often left with catastrophic injuries that require extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. Family members may need to contend with the sudden and tragic loss of a loved one. Unfortunately, truck companies and their insurance providers will virtually never accept responsibility when their driver causes a collision. This is why it’s so important for victims to carefully consider their options with experienced legal counsel.
