CASTAIC, CALIFORNIA (March 4, 2026) – A young man identified as Alejandro Covarrubias has tragically died in a Castaic Amazon truck accident on the five freeway near Lake Hughes Road.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the accident took place around 11:22 p.m. on February 27. Alejandro Covarrubias was changing a tire on his vehicle when he was hit by a semi-truck.

The driver of the semi-truck did not remain at the scene of the collision. Paramedics were called to the scene to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, Alejandro Covarrubias died due to the severe nature of his injuries.

Authorities closed multiple lanes on the 5 Freeway as they continue to investigate the collision. As of Monday, it does not appear that any arrests have been made.

A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Castaic Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck drivers must obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate with a great deal of care to avoid collisions. This necessitates that they maintain their vehicles at a safe speed at all times. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” There are many ways that a truck driver may have acted negligently prior to hitting a pedestrian.

  • Speeding: A truck driver may have been traveling at an unsafe speed given the prevailing road conditions. Even traveling the speed limit could be considered dangerous during periods of reduced visibility.
  • Lane Changes: A truck driver may have allowed their vehicle to drift into opposing lanes of traffic or onto the shoulder of the freeway.
  • Rest: A truck driver may have failed to take periodic rest breaks as required by law. Federal law prohibits truck drivers from working beyond a certain threshold in any given day or week.
  • Distraction: A truck driver may have been distracted by their phone or other objects.

If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the roadway, this could be construed as negligence. When a truck driver fails to remain at the scene of an injury collision, they could face criminal liability in addition to civil liability. The company that the truck driver worked for could also be held at fault. Generally speaking, employers can be held vicariously liable for the wrongful actions of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job.

Steps to Take After Castaic Amazon Truck Accidents

Many people have been seriously injured or killed in accidents involving Amazon trucks over the last several years. According to CBS News, “In the past two years, at least 57 people have died in more than four dozen crashes involving federally regulated carriers shipping for Amazon, according to FMCSA data, though the data does not indicate who was at fault in these incidents.” Several steps should be taken after any accident involving an Amazon truck.

  • Police Report: The police should be called to the scene of the accident as early as possible so that they can begin investigating. The report that they create will be very helpful in a number of different situations.
  • Evidence Preservation: All of the physical evidence associated with the collision should be preserved. Even a small piece of any vehicle that flees the scene of a crash can be used to identify it at a later date.
  • Eyewitnesses: People who witnessed the collision should be interviewed as early as possible while their memories are still fresh.
  • Legal Review: The family of any person who died in an Amazon truck accident should seek an independent review of the collision by a team experienced in accident reconstruction and negligence claims.

Amazon prides itself on delivering packages as quickly and efficiently as possible. But this efficiency has also come with an extremely high price for many different families. To make matters worse, Amazon will virtually never accept responsibility if one of their drivers is involved in a fatal crash. They’re more likely to blame the victim or claim that their driver was working as an “independent contractor.” This is why it is so important for these accidents to be thoroughly investigated by an outside party.
