REDLANDS, CALIFORNIA (December 16, 2024) – A man was hospitalized in a Redlands police shooting along a stretch of Metrolink railroad tracks on Nevada Street.

San Bernardino County officials are saying that the incident took place around 7:30 a.m. on Monday. Deputies received reports about a person who was allegedly trespassing.

A deputy located the suspect and made contact. At some point, an altercation occurred, and the deputy pulled out his weapon.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the person. They were taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Redlands Police Shootings

California has one of the highest instances of police shootings. A large portion of these encounters involve a suspect who is in the midst of a mental health crisis. According to the LAist, “Between 2017 and 2023, 31% of shootings by L.A. police involved a person perceived by officers to be living with mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis, according to annual use-of-force reports.” There are a number of signs that a person may be in the midst of a mental health crisis.

  • A person may appear confused or disoriented.
  • A person may experience hallucinations or delusions.
  • A person may have incoherent or rapid speech.
  • A person may display erratic or unpredictable behavior.

Police officers have a legal obligation to take reasonable measures in order to avoid needlessly harming suspects. Among other things, they must work to de-escalate encounters with suspects. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law, or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. There are a number of ways that a police officer may have used excessive force.

  • A police officer may have shot a suspect merely because they were attempting to flee.
  • A police officer may have hit a suspect who was already restrained or subdued.
  • A police officer may have put a suspect in an illegal chokehold.

Police shootings are often highly preventable. They tend to involve officers who are not particularly well trained or otherwise fail to de-escalate encounters. If a police officer fails to follow a safety rule promulgated by their employer, this could serve as evidence of negligence. The family of any person who died in a police shooting may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
