RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA (May 27, 2026) – A 41-year-old Riverside County teacher identified as Samantha Watson was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting one of her students.

Riverside County officials are saying that the arrest took place on Friday. Samantha Watson was arrested on suspicion of multiple crimes, including sending harmful material to a minor and oral copulation.

Deputies said they became aware of the allegations on January 28, 2026. Authorities are claiming that Samantha Watson was having inappropriate contact with a student during 2017 and 2018.

Authorities have not identified the school where Samantha Watson was a teacher. However, reporters were able to indicate that Youth Public Charter Schools operates in the area officers described.

Deputies are asking other potential victims to come forward. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Riverside County Sexual Abuse

Schools have a legal obligation to properly monitor students at all times of the day and protect them from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. Consider, for example, Taylor v. Oakland Scavenger Co., 17 Cal. 2d 594 [110 P.2d 1044], “It is the duty of the school authorities to supervise at all times the conduct of the children on the school grounds and to enforce those rules and regulations necessary to their protection.” Schools should take several measures to prevent students from being sexually abused.

  • Hiring: Schools should have a rigorous hiring process that includes running stringent background checks.
  • Supervisions: Schools should have safety rules that prevent students from being isolated with individual teachers.
  • Training: School employees should be trained to recognize signs of sexual abuse.

Sexual abuse is rarely an isolated incident. By the time any teacher or school worker is arrested, there are often many instances of misconduct. There were also likely several red flags that were missed. These could come in the form of numerous complaints against a teacher. If a school district has actual or constructive notice that a teacher poses a risk of harm, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim.

Steps to Take After Riverside County Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse remains alarmingly common across California and the United States. According to the National Education Association, “there were 14,938 incidents of sexual violence in K–12 schools in 2017 – 2018 compared with 9,649 in 2015 – 2016, representing a 55 percent increase. These include incidents of rape or attempted rape and sexual assault. Why the number of incidents jumped that much hasn’t been determined.” Multiple actions should be taken after sexual abuse in Riverside County.

  • The police should be alerted of the abuse as early as possible so that they can begin an investigation.
  • All of the messages between the perpetrator and the victim should be reviewed.
  • The history of disciplinary actions involving the perpetrator should be understood.
  • The family of any child sexually abused by a teacher should contact an experienced sexual abuse attorney.

Sexual abuse is one of the most destructive and harmful experiences that most people will ever go through. Unfortunately, schools will almost never take responsibility for when a student is harmed in their care. This is why it is so important that victims and their families seek legal guidance. They are able to pursue some measure of accountability and justice through a civil claim. A sexual abuse attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
