Ricardo Andrade Killed In Pasadena Police Shooting

Ricardo Andrade (Full Name: Ricardo Guade Andrade) Killed After Police Pursuit Ended In Residential Pasadena Neighborhood

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA (April 15, 2024) – Ricardo Andrade tragically died in a Pasadena police shooting after crashing into a white Tesla in a residential neighborhood.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. Officers said that they encountered a driver of a pickup truck facing the wrong direction on a one-way street. That driver was later identified as Ricardo Andrade.

When they encountered the driver, he allegedly sped off and barely missed hitting an officer. This initiated a pursuit. The pursuit came to an end when the pickup truck crashed into a white Tesla in someone’s front yard.

Police continued a foot pursuit of the suspect, who fled into the backyard of a home on Oak Knoll Circle. When police confronted the man, he allegedly refused to drop a handgun before officers opened fire.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the man. Ricardo Andrade was later taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Pasadena Police Shootings

California has one of the highest instances of police shootings in the United States. Many more are injured during police encounters. According to the Law Enforcement Epidemiology Project, “In the U.S. during a given year, an estimated 1 million civilians experience police threat of or use of force resulting in a conservative estimate of 75,000 non-fatal injuries requiring hospital treatment and 600-1000 deaths.” There are several factors that can make certain police encounters more dangerous.

  • Arrests are much more dangerous in crowded spaces where there is the possibility that innocent bystanders could be injured.
  • Police encounters are more dangerous when suspects are under the influence.
  • Police encounters are more dangerous when officers are poorly trained.

Police officers are always supposed to use the least amount of force necessary for any given encounter. A police department could be liable for the excessive force of one of their officers. According to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of law, deprives someone of their rights afforded under the Constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. Several steps should be taken after any police shooting.

  • Body camera footage from all officers involved should be sought.
  • The actions of officers leading up to a shooting should be understood.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.
  • An experienced civil rights attorney should be contacted.

Even if a police shooting seemed justified in the moment, it may have been excessive depending on how officers acted leading up to the incident. Sadly, though, police departments will do everything in their power to deny responsibility for any incident. This is why it is so important to have these encounters evaluated by someone knowledgeable of civil rights claims.
