Orange County Authorities Concerned That There May Be Additional Victims of Michael Duran Who Have Not Come Forward

ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (August 15, 2025) – Orange County basketball coach Michael Duran was arrested on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with an underage girl.
Orange County authorities are saying that the victim worked as an assistant basketball coach at Dana Hills High School. The victim in this case alleged that Michael Duran groomed her prior to their sexual relationship.
The defendant also worked as a coach for SoCal Fins, a basketball club in San Juan Capistrano. Michael Duran has since been charged with oral copulation with a minor under 18.
Authorities believe that there may be additional victims. A full investigation into all of the allegations remains ongoing at this time.
Protecting Children From Sexual Abuse Involving School Coaches
Sexual abuse involving school officials remains a common occurrence. Coaches make up a large proportion of the perpetrators. According to the NBOA, “Of the coaches who were abusive, more than half (63%) abused multiple victims, with head coaches committing 83% of incidents of abuse within the study.” Schools should take a number of actions to prevent coaches and teachers from sexually abusing students.
- Rigorous Screening: Schools should ensure that all teachers and coaches undergo a rigorous screening process. This includes checking references and running a background check on all applicants.
- Training: Schools should train all teachers and coaches to recognize the signs that abuse is taking place. In particular, most abuse is preceded by grooming behaviors.
- Clear Policies: Schools should establish clear policies with respect to acceptable behaviors involving students.
- Reporting: Schools should have robust reporting systems. This will include encouraging students and staff to report suspected misconduct. All reports of misconduct should be documented and taken seriously.
Teachers are considered mandated reporters in the state of California. They have a legal obligation to report reasonably suspected instances of abuse. If a teacher fails to report suspected instances of student sexual abuse, they could face criminal sanctions. When schools fail to take appropriate action to protect students, they could face civil liability.
Liability for Orange County Coach Sexual Abuse
Schools have a legal obligation to protect students from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. If a school has actual or constructive notice that a teacher poses a risk of harm to students, they must take action. A school could be held liable if they negligently hired or retained a teacher that posed a risk of harm to students. There are several elements that must be demonstrated in any negligent hiring claim.
- The employer retained the employee that caused harm to the student.
- The employee was unfit or dangerous for the position they were hired for.
- The employer knew or should’ve known that the employee posed a risk of harm.
- The employer failed to take reasonable action to prevent the harm.
Sexual abuse is often highly preventable in any school setting. Part of the problem is that teachers and school staff often fail to report problematic behavior. By the time any teacher is arrested for sexual abuse, there may have been numerous red flags that were missed. Any person that is sexually abused by a school coach may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
