GLENDALE, CALIFORNIA (March 6, 2025) – A Glendale nursing home worker identified as Larry Stanfill was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a patient.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the defendant worked at the Glendale Post Acute Center facility since November of last year. Larry Stanfill worked as a certified nursing assistant.

Prior to working at the Glendale Post Acute Center, he worked at several other facilities. This includes the Chandler Convalescent Hospital in Glendale, the Pasadena Park Healthcare and Wellness Center in Pasadena, and an unidentified El Monte facility.

Larry Stanfill was arrested on February 21 for his alleged crimes. He has since been released on bond. The Glendale Police Department is encouraging anyone to reach out to them if they have additional information.

Liability for Sexual Abuse at Glendale Nursing Homes

Sexual abuse remains all too common at long-term care facilities. According to Nursing Research and Practice, “Nursing homes are not free from sexual abuse, and both staff and residents have been identified as perpetrators. Residents in nursing homes are particularly vulnerable and at risk of abuse because they are more or less dependent on their caregivers owing to chronic illnesses, especially those with cognitive and behavioral problems.” There are a number of measures that nursing homes should take in order to prevent sexual abuse.

  • All nursing home employees should undergo a thorough background check.
  • Nursing homes should investigate all suspected instances of abuse or misconduct.
  • Nursing homes should establish and enforce clear codes of conduct with respect to appropriate behavior.

All nursing home residents in California have a legal right to live free from sexual abuse and misconduct. Consider, for example, the Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Civil Protection Act (EADACPA). Nursing home residents are also protected by the Nursing Home Reform Act (1987). It requires that nursing homes receiving funding from Medicare or Medicaid protect residents from sexual abuse, neglect, and other misconduct.

A nursing home could face civil liability if one of their residents is sexually abused. When a nursing home has actual or constructive notice that an employee poses a danger to residents, they must take action. If a nursing home does not implement adequate security measures or supervision, this could also form the basis of a civil claim. There are several elements that must be demonstrated for any claim that a nursing home abuse suspect was negligently hired or retained.

  • The worker was unfit for their job or posed an unreasonable danger to clients.
  • The worker’s employer knew or should have known about the danger that the worker posed.
  • The unfit nature of the worker caused harm to the victim.
  • The nursing home’s negligent hiring or retention was a substantial factor in causing the harm.

Sexual abuse is one of the most harmful experiences that people will go through in their lives. Children, elderly people, and those with disabilities are at a particularly high risk. For the most part, sexual abuse at long-term care facilities is highly preventable. It tends to be the result of lax security measures and negligence. It is important that abuse victims and their families understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
