In another high-profile sex abuse case against the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Carrillo Law Firm was able to secure a huge settlement against the District for the sexual abuse of children by one of their teachers at a Wilmington school. Robert Pimentel, who worked at George De La Torre Elementary School in Wilmington, was arrested and was found guilty of sexually abusing girls between 2002-2012. Pimentel had been accused of lewd acts with minors between 2005 and 2007 and parents had previously raised concerns about him being inappropriate with students. Specifically, in 2009, parents protested at the back gate of the school that Pimentel had been touching female students and giving them candy and taking their photographs without parent permission. Unfortunately, yet again the District, and specifically, Irene Hinojosa, the principal, ignored those concerns and allowed Pimentel to remain free in the classroom where he continued to sexually abuse multiple minors.
Pimentel was sentenced to 12 years in state prison for his acts. The principal, Irene Hinojosa, who had been aware of allegations against Pimentel from 2002 and 2008 of his lewd behavior with minors, was removed in 2012 and resigned before the district was preparing to fire her.
The LAUSD denied any wrongdoing and litigated the case against the children until they finally reached a settlement with the students. The Carrillo Law Firm represented 3 of the sexually abused children and along with the Manly, Stewart and Finaldi firm were able to secure another record settlement against the LAUSD.
