Settlement for Survivors of Sexual Abuse by a First-Grade Teacher
Carrillo Law Firm secured a $40 million settlement in litigation arising from the sexual abuse of first-grade students at an LAUSD Elementary School. The students alleged that their teacher, sexually abused them between and that Los Angeles Unified School District administrators failed to protect them despite warning signs and complaints.
The case focused on missed opportunities to stop the abuse. Teaching assistants reported that the teacher repeatedly sent them out of the classroom and kept female students inside during recess and lunch. Students also reported inappropriate touching. According to the evidence uncovered, the teacher remained in the classroom even after a suspected child abuse report was filed and was not removed until another student came forward later in that school year.
The survivors described lasting emotional and psychological harm extending into adulthood. The settlement resolved claims that the district’s failures in supervision and retention allowed the abuse to continue.
