Richard Aguiar, Pomona Police Sergeant, Charged Following July DUI Car Accident That Injured Woman Near Schaefer Avenue and Monte Vista Avenue in Chino

CHINO, CALIFORNIA (October 1, 2026) – A 50-year-old Pomona police sergeant identified as Richard Aguiar has been arrested following a Chino car accident by the intersection of Schaefer Avenue and Monte Vista Avenue.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the collision occurred around 8:20 AM on July 26. Richard Aguiar was driving a Chevrolet Silverado when he rear-ended another vehicle that was stopped at the intersection.
Following that collision, Richard Aguiar allegedly fled the scene and continued driving at a high rate of speed. He kept driving south on Monte Vista Avenue when he reportedly sideswiped a Ford Fusion.
That collision caused the Ford Fusion to collide with a tree. His vehicle eventually came to a stop after it collided with a fire hydrant and multiple other objects before also hitting a tree.
Paramedics and other first responders were called to the scene of the crash to help all of the victims. Richard Aguiar was reportedly unconscious inside of his Silverado and later transported to a hospital.
He has since been arrested and allegedly had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.299, which is roughly 4 times the legal limit. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
Liability for Chino DUI Collisions
California drivers must use reasonable care to avoid collisions that would injure other people. In particular, California Vehicle Code section 23152 prohibits any person from operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher. Commercial drivers are held to an even higher standard and must not operate a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.04% or higher. Even a relatively small amount of alcohol can substantially impair a person’s ability to operate their vehicle safely.
- Alcohol can cause delayed reaction times.
- Alcohol can make it difficult for a person to stay within their own lane of traffic.
- Alcohol can make it hard for drivers to track moving objects.
- Alcohol can make it harder for a driver to maintain a constant speed.
When a driver causes an accident while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they could be legally responsible for any injuries resulting from the collision under the doctrine of negligence per se. Liability for a DUI collision could potentially extend to several other parties if the responsible driver was working at the time of a collision. Under California law, employers can be vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties.
What to Do After a Los Angeles County DUI Car Accident
Driver intoxication remains one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death involving motor vehicle collisions. According to one study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 12,429 people died in motor vehicle collisions involving a driver with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher in 2023 alone. This accounts for roughly 30% of all US traffic fatalities that year. Multiple actions should be taken after any DUI collision in California.
- The police report created after the accident should be carefully reviewed.
- Lots of photographs of the accident site should be taken.
- The results of any blood alcohol test of the at-fault driver should be reviewed.
- Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible.
- Any person injured due to the negligent actions of an intoxicated driver should consider the legal options with a team experienced in personal injury claims.
It could be difficult to know where to begin after any DUI car accident in Los Angeles County. Victims are routinely left with serious injuries that impair their ability to work or even perform daily tasks. To make matters worse, police departments and insurance providers are not likely to accept responsibility following any collision that leaves someone seriously injured. This is why it is so important that accident victims seek the guidance of an experienced personal injury attorney.
