Authorities and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help all of the victims. They located one driver who was lying on the ground and suffering from major injuries.
Tragically, that person was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. Another person was transported to a local area hospital to receive treatment.
A full investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Riverside County Truck Accidents
Truck drivers are expected to operate with an abundance of caution. They must also obtain a commercial driver’s license and abide by all federal safety regulations for commercial drivers. According to California Vehicle Code 22350, “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.” Truck companies should take several measures to avoid truck accidents.
- Training: Truck companies should ensure that their drivers receive ample training on all of these specific rigs that they will be using.
- Technology: Truck companies should consider installing forward collision avoidance systems and blind spot monitoring cameras to help avoid accidents.
- Route Planning: Truck companies should eliminate as many left turns as possible from the routes that their drivers take.
If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a vehicle in the roadway, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Even if a passenger vehicle were stopped in the middle of the freeway, this does not relieve a truck driver of their obligation to slow down and use caution. Depending on the facts of any case, a freight broker could also be liable for an accident if they hired a truck company with a poor safety record.
Steps to Take After Riverside County Truck Accidents
Trucks account for a relatively small number of the total vehicles on the roadway. But they are involved in a disproportionately high number of serious injury and fatal collisions. According to the IIHS, “In 2023, 4,354 people died in crashes involving large trucks. Sixteen percent of these deaths were truck occupants, 65% were passenger vehicle occupants, and 17% were pedestrians, bicyclists or motorcyclists.” It is important that certain measures are taken after any semi-truck accident.
- Surveillance Footage: All of the surveillance footage that may have captured the collision should be sought.
- Evidence Preservation: Any physical evidence left behind after a crash should be collected. This includes the event data recorder of any commercial truck involved.
- Photographs: Lots of photographs of the accident site should be taken. Even a still photograph can help reveal whether or not a truck driver attempted to break to avoid a collision.
- Independent Review: The family of any person who died in a truck accident should seek an independent review by a team experienced in accident claims.
Truck accidents tend to be highly preventable in many situations. They often involve drivers who were not properly scanning the road ahead of them. Part of the problem is that many truck companies will push their drivers to complete their routes as quickly as possible. This can lead to situations where truck drivers adopt unsafe habits. The family of any person who died in a truck accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
