LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (December 4, 2025) – A man suspected of assault was shot by a Los Angeles police detective in the Westlake District near Alvarado Street and Olympic Boulevard.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident began around 11:00 AM on Tuesday. A plainclothes detective allegedly saw a man use a knife to stab another person.

That detective ordered the man to drop the knife before opening fire. The subject was struck by gunfire, and additional police and EMS were called to the scene.

First responders transported the subject to the hospital. They also took one person who reportedly had stab wounds.

A full investigation into the LAPD shooting remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Los Angeles Police Shootings

Police officers are expected to exercise a great deal of care to avoid harming suspects. A police department can be liable for the excessive force of their officers. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. Officers should take several measures to avoid needlessly injuring people.

  • De-escalation: Police officers should prioritize de-escalation techniques. This will involve them using calm communication and avoiding rushing into volatile situations.
  • Vulnerable Populations: Police officers should follow all relevant protocol when dealing with vulnerable populations. This includes people with cognitive disabilities or mental illness.
  • Use-of-Force Continuum: Police officers should use the least amount of force necessary for any given encounter. They should prioritize less-lethal options like tasers when possible.

Police shootings tend to be highly preventable. They may involve situations where officers fail to de-escalate encounters. In particular, a large portion of fatal police shootings involve suspects with a mental illness. According to the Treatment Advocacy Center, “The risk of being killed while being approached or stopped by law enforcement in the community is 16 times higher for individuals with untreated serious mental illness than for other civilians.” In far too many situations, officers fail to follow official protocol for these encounters.

Steps to Take After Los Angeles Police Shootings

The Los Angeles Police Department has a long history of questionable use of force incidents. Just this year alone, officer-involved shootings are up substantially. According to ABC 7 News, “Police shootings in Los Angeles are up nearly 50%, according to new data released by Chief Jim McDonnell.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any police shooting.

  • Medical Attention: Victims of police shootings should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Follow-up care is also important. Failing to follow a treatment plan can create physical and legal complications down the road.
  • Eyewitnesses: The contact information of eyewitnesses should also be sought. They can play a critical role in establishing what happened.
  • Body Camera Footage: All of the body camera footage related to the encounter should be gathered.
  • Legal Representation: Any person injured due to the excessive force of police officers should carefully consider their legal options with an experienced civil rights attorney.

Police shootings are often highly complex events. Determining whether or not any specific use of force was justified will require a careful review of the facts. Even if a certain use of force seemed justified in the moment, it may not have been. Courts in California will consider the totality of circumstances leading up to a shooting when determining whether or not it was reasonable. This is why it is so important that these incidents are reviewed by an experienced attorney.
