Investigation Underway After Beverly Hills Police Officer Kills One Man After Two Men Were Involved In A Fight In North Hills

Carrillo

NORTH HILLS, CALIFORNIA (August 16, 2024) – An off-duty Beverly Hills police officer was involved in a fatal shooting of a suspect in North Hills, according to the LAPD.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place around 8:18 p.m. on Thursday night. An off-duty Beverley Hills police officer encountered two men engaged in some type of altercation.

One of the men allegedly had a pipe, and the other allegedly had a handgun. The officer opened fire and shot the suspect.

Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the person shot. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For North Hills Police Shootings

Police use of force remains alarmingly common. According to the Law Enforcement Epidemiology Project, “In the U.S. during a given year, an estimated 1 million civilians experience police threat of or use of force resulting in a conservative estimate of 75,000 non-fatal injuries requiring hospital treatment and 600-1000 deaths.” There are a number of common factors that contribute to police shootings.

  • Police shootings are more likely when suspects are under the influence.
  • Police shootings tend to involve suspects with an undiagnosed mental illness.
  • Police shootings are more likely when officers are poorly trained.

A police department could be liable for the actions of one of their officers, even if that officer was technically off-duty when the incident took place. In particular, an officer may have engaged in misconduct while asserting his or her official authority as an officer. This may include instances where an officer brandished their badge or otherwise said that they were an officer. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any police shooting.

  • All medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • The actions of officers leading up to the shooting should be understood.

Police departments will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if one of their officers kills a suspect. When police departments investigate themselves, they inevitably find that their officers did nothing wrong. This is why it is so important for victims of excessive force to seek legal counsel as early as possible. A civil rights attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
