Officers said that the suspect failed to comply with verbal commands before an officer-involved shooting occurred. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the suspect.

Sadly, he was pronounced dead ad the scene. A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Canoga Park Police Shootings

Far too many people are killed in police shootings every year in the United States. According to Statista, “the trend of fatal police shootings in the United States seems to only be increasing, with a total 680 civilians having been shot, 92 of whom were Black, as of October 3, 2023. In 2022, there were 1,097 fatal police shootings.” People with untreated mental illness are substantially more likely to be killed in police shootings. There are a number of measures that police department should take in order to reduce the prevalence of police shootings.

  • Police officers should be trained to de-escalate encounters with suspects.
  • Police officers should be trained to determine if a suspect is in the midst of a mental health crisis.
  • Police officers should be equipped with less-lethal alternatives such as tasers.
  • Police departments should build relationships with the community.

Police officers must use their authority with great discretion and refrain from using excessive force. Police officers must use force only as a measure of last resort. Pursuant to California AB 392, “the authority to use physical force, conferred on peace officers by this section, is a serious responsibility that shall be exercised judiciously and with respect for human rights and dignity and for the sanctity of every human life.” There are several situations where police officers should not shoot suspects.

  • Police officers should not shoot suspects as they are attempting to flee.
  • Police officers should not shoot suspects who have already been restrained.
  • Police officers should not should suspects who do not pose an immediate threat to anyone.
  • Police officers should refrain from using force against unarmed suspects.

Police shootings are often preventable in many situations. They tend to involve failures at numerous levels. Sadly, police departments will often do everything that they can to deny responsibility if their officer is involved in a deadly encounter. This is why it is so important that evidence is properly preserved after any officer-involved shooting.
