Los Angeles Police Department Officers Injured Man in Police Shooting During Alleged Burglary at Property on Normandie Avenue

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (May 6, 2026) – A man was injured in a Los Angeles Police Department shooting during a suspected burglary on the 7600 block of Normandy Avenue.
Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place around 4:53 AM on Friday morning. Police officers were called to the scene after getting reports of a suspected burglary in progress.
Authorities claim that they encountered a man who is armed with a knife. Not long after the encounter began, officers opened fire and shot the man.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the shooting to help the victim. He was transported to a local area hospital to receive treatment.
A full investigation into the encounter remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Los Angeles Police Department Shootings
Police officers have a legal obligation to use the least amount of force necessary for any given encounter. The department that they work for could potentially be liable for the excessive force of their officers. Pursuant to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of any statute, law or ordinance, causes a citizen of the United States to be deprived of their rights secured by the constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. Police departments should take several actions to avoid officer-involved shootings.
- De-escalation: Police departments should adopt and enforce a strong de-escalation policy.
- Training: Police departments should ensure that all of their officers receive ample training. Officers should be able to recognize when a suspect may be under the influence or in the midst of a mental health crisis.
- Use-of-Force Continuum: Police officers should only escalate their use of force after all other measures have been exhausted. In particular, officers should use less-lethal options when possible.
- Tactics: Police officers should avoid rushing into any encounter. Instead, they should use distance and focus on containment when feasible.
Police shootings are often highly preventable. These situations tend to involve officers who were either unwilling or unable to properly de-escalate encounters. Part of the problem is that many officers are simply not well trained to handle people who may be in the midst of a mental health crisis or under the influence of drugs. Even if a police officer’s use of force seemed reasonable when viewed in isolation, it may not have been. Courts will take into consideration all of the circumstances leading up to any shooting.
Steps to Take After Los Angeles County Police Shootings
The Los Angeles Police Department has a long and sordid history of using excessive force on members of the public. According to ABC 7 News, “Police shootings in Los Angeles are up nearly 50%, according to new data released by Chief Jim McDonnell. The chief discussed the new numbers during Tuesday’s police commission meeting. McDonnell said year to date, the LAPD has recorded 31 officer-involved […] shootings compared to 21 last year, marking a 47.6% increase.” Certain measures should be taken after any police shooting.
- All of the medical records related to the incident should be collected.
- Body camera footage from the officers involved should be gathered.
- The circumstances leading up to the collision should be investigated.
- The family of any person who died should seek an independent review by a team experienced in constitutional law.
It can be hard to know where to begin after any police shooting. Victims are often left with catastrophic injuries and high medical bills. Even after a person’s physical injuries heal, the psychological injuries can take a lifelong toll. Unfortunately, the LAPD has demonstrated time and time again that it is not interested in accepting responsibility when it seriously injures someone. They are more likely to blame the victim. Any person injured due to the negligent actions of the LAPD may be able to see some measure of accountability through a constitutional claim.
