SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (February 17, 2026) – A 55-year-old man identified as Kent Cable, who was an employee of the Lakeside Union School District, was arrested on child sexual abuse charges.

San Diego County officials are saying that the incident began on September 8, 2025. They received information that related to sexual abuse allegations involving Kent Cable.

Following that investigation, detectives said they were able to gather probable cause that the defendant committed multiple crimes.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, “CAU Detectives had probable cause to believe 55-year-old Kent Cable was in violation of three (3) counts of 288.7 (b) P.C. – Sexual penetration with a child 10 years of age or younger and four (4) counts of 288 (a) P.C. – Lewd and lascivious act on a child under 14 years of age.”

The defendant was booked into the San Diego Central Jail. He was also removed as an employee from the Lakeside Union School District.

Liability for San Diego Sexual Abuse

Schools have a legal obligation to protect all the students in their care from foreseeable sources of harm, including criminal misconduct. Consider, for example, Taylor v. Oakland Scavenger Co., 17 Cal. 2d 594 [110 P.2d 1044], “It is the duty of the school authorities to supervise at all times the conduct of the children on the school grounds and to enforce those rules and regulations necessary to their protection.” There are several measures that schools should take to protect students from sexual abuse.

  • Schools should ensure that all of their teachers and faculty undergo a rigorous background check.
  • Schools should ensure that students are properly monitored at all portions of the day.
  • Schools should establish clear policies related to reporting potential misconduct.
  • Schools should develop and enforce written policies related to boundaries that teachers and other faculty must adhere to.

Depending on the specific facts of any case, a school could be liable if a teacher or other school employee sexually abuses students. When a school has actual or constructive notice that a teacher poses a risk of harm to students, they must act. For example, a teacher may have numerous complaints against them, but school officials may still decide to do nothing about it.

Steps to Take After San Diego County Sexual Abuse

Many children are the victims of sexual abuse in a school setting every year. According to the National Education Association, “there were 14,938 incidents of sexual violence in K–12 schools in 2017 – 2018 compared with 9,649 in 2015 – 2016, representing a 55 percent increase.” Certain action should be taken after any suspected instance of sexual abuse in a school setting.

  • The police should be alerted to the abuse as early as possible so that they can begin investigating.
  • All medical records related to the abuse should be collected.
  • All communication between the perpetrator and the victim should be carefully reviewed.
  • The parents of any child who is sexually abused should contact an experienced sexual abuse attorney.

Sexual abuse tends to be highly preventable in a school setting. Indeed, by the time any school official is arrested for abuse, there were likely many red flags that were missed. Unfortunately, schools will virtually never accept responsibility when they fail to protect students from sexual abuse or other crimes. This is why it is so important that a skilled legal attorney examines the unique circumstances that led up to any incident.
