Jayden Joe Lang, Former Employee at Grossmont High School in El Cajon, Facing Multiple Felony Charges Over Relationship With Student

EL CAJON, CALIFORNIA (September 12, 2026) – A Grossmont High School employee identified as Jayden Lang has been arrested on 12 felony charges involving an alleged relationship with a student.
El Cajon Police Department officials are saying that they were notified in April by staff that one employee was having an inappropriate relationship with a student. That person was identified as Jayden Lang.
After an investigation into the accusations, the defendant was arrested. He is currently facing 12 felony charges, including statutory rape.
Authorities said that there are no other incidents they are investigating involving the suspect. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Sexual Misconduct Involving School Employees
Schools have a legal obligation to protect students from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. This necessitates that schools adequately supervise students at all times and enforce all rules necessary for their protection. California law also requires teachers and other school employees to report any reasonably suspected instance of abuse under California Penal Code § 11166. Courts will take into consideration numerous factors when evaluating liability for any instance of sexual abuse involving a school employee.
- It matters whether school officials maintained clear policies related to boundaries between students and adults.
- It also matters whether there were any potential prior complaints against the suspect. Prior complaints will make additional incidents increasingly foreseeable.
- Another important area to consider is whether the suspect underwent a thorough background check that revealed anything concerning.
- Courts will also take into consideration whether or not any supervisory failure contributed to the resulting harm to the student.
When school officials failed to monitor students to protect them from foreseeable sources of harm, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Consider, for example, Doe v. Lawndale Elementary School District, 72 Cal.App.5th 113 (Cal. Ct. App. 2021). That case involved a 13-year-old student who was allegedly groomed and sexually assaulted by an adult school employee. The California court of appeal held that school administrators have a duty to protect students from sexual abuse. This duty of protection extends to situations where school officials lacked particular knowledge that an employee had a propensity to harm students.
Preventing Sexual Abuse in San Diego County Schools
Sexual abuse remains far more common across schools than many people realize. According to one study of high school age students conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, 11.8% of female students and another 2.7% of male students reported at least one instance of sexual abuse by a person that was at least five years older than them. Children who have physical or intellectual disabilities are particularly susceptible to being abused. There are a number of measures that schools can take to help prevent abuse.
- Schools should establish and enforce clear boundaries related to appropriate contact between teachers and students.
- Schools should have numerous ways for abuse and misconduct to be anonymously reported
- Schools should immediately investigate any suspected instance of abuse or conduct involving employees.
- Schools should ensure that all of their employees and volunteers undergo a thorough background check.
- Schools should set policies that prevent individual students from being isolated with individual teachers.
Sexual abuse tends to be highly preventable in many different situations. It is often the consequence of improper supervision and other systemic failures. Unfortunately, schools are not likely to accept responsibility when one of their teachers sexually abuses a student. This is why it is so important that these incidents are thoroughly investigated by an outside party. Victims of sexual abuse in their family members are able to see some measure of accountability through a civil action.
