OCEANSIDE, CALIFORNIA November 28, 2023) – A Vista Unified School District counselor identified as Conner Chanove is facing multiple felony charges of child sex abuse.

San Diego County officials are saying that the incident first began on November 18. The mother of a teen girl told prosecutors that she used a tracking app to find her daughter in the back of Conner Chanove’s car at Guajome Lake Park in Oceanside.

She further claimed that when she opened the car door the defendant had his pants down. The defendant also worked as the child’s water polo coach before his arrest.

His bail is currently set at $1,000,000. Conner Chanove has pleaded not guilty to the felony charges. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Oceanside Child Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse remains alarmingly common for children across their school experience. According to City Journal, “a 2000 investigation by the Association of American University Women claimed that nearly 9.6 percent of students in grades eight through 11 were victims of sexual misconduct by school personnel, a figure that included both physical and verbal actions.” There are a number of signs that a child may be the victim of sexual abuse at school.

  • Abuse victims may have recurring nightmares.
  • Abuse victims may show a  sharp decline in academic performance.
  • Abuse victims may develop eating disorders.
  • Abuse victims may show a sudden aversion to being touched.

All schools have a legal obligation to properly supervise the students in their care. They must enforce all rules and regulations necessary to keep them safe. When students are not properly supervised at school, they are much more likely to become the victims of abuse. If a school knew that a certain teacher or school employee posed a risk to children and failed to act, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any suspected instance of child sexual abuse.

  • All communication between the abuser and the student should be reviewed.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records related to any assault should be reviewed.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • A police report should be created.

By the time any school employee is arrested for child sexual abuse, there were often many red flags that were missed. Teachers are mandated reporters and must report reasonably suspected instances of teacher misconduct, but far too often this does not take place. The family of any child that is sexually abused may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A teacher sexual abuse attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
