Jane Does v. Los Angeles Unified School District (Hart and Liggett Elementary Schools — Round 3)

Settlement for Survivors of Sexual Abuse by Teacher Rene Tenas

Carrillo Law Firm secured a $13,665,000 settlement in the third round of litigation identified in the firm’s settlement list involving sexual abuse by LAUSD teacher Rene Tenas at Hart and Liggett Elementary Schools. The plaintiffs described abuse suffered as young elementary-school students and the lasting harm that followed.

The litigation examined failures in teacher supervision, student protection, and the response to complaints. The plaintiffs’ evidence described missed teacher evaluations at Liggett and a history of complaints and disciplinary records concerning Tenas at Hart. Plaintiffs alleged that administrators failed to take effective protective measures despite these warning signs, allowing Tenas continued access to vulnerable students.

The survivors reported anxiety, depression, difficulty trusting others, and long-term effects on their relationships and daily lives. This settlement addresses a later group of claims involving both schools.
