OXNARD, CALIFORNIA (December 21, 2023) – A former Oxnard high school track coach identified as Aaron Mora, 25, has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of sex crimes involving students.

Ventura County officials are saying that the former teacher as been sentenced to two years in prison and must register as a sex offender for life. Aaron Mora pled guilty to one felony count of sending harmful material to a child.

He is a former track and field coach at Pacifica High School. Prosecutors have said that Aaron Mora texted inappropriate sexual images of himself to an underage student on the team.

Liability For Oxnard Teacher Sexual Abuse

Children can be particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse at the hands of coaches. According to Insider, “The difference between coaches and academic teachers is that coaches might have access to students in unique ways. School coaches are tasked with guiding student-athletes through difficult physical maneuvers. That often means that coaches have to physically place their hands on a student to either evaluate a complaint of pain or demonstrate a way to complete an action.” There are a number of steps that schools should take in order to prevent student sexual abuse.

  • Schools should thoroughly vet all teachers, coaches and school employees.
  • Schools should set forth clear and comprehensive guidelines on sexual misconduct.
  • Schools should thoroughly investigate all reports of sexual misconduct.
  • Schools should ensure that the children they are charged with protecting are properly monitored at all times.

Schools have a legal obligation to protect students from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. This includes sexual abuse involving teachers and coaches. Consider, for example, Taylor v. Oakland Scavenger Co., 17 Cal. 2d 594 [110 P.2d 1044], “It is the duty of the school authorities to supervise at all times the conduct of the children on the school grounds and to enforce those rules and regulations necessary to their protection.” If a school fails to properly supervise students who are then abused, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that certain steps are taken after any instance of school sexual abuse.

  • A police report should be created.
  • Text messages and other evidence involved in the abuse should be preserved.
  • School records related to the abuse should be sought.
  • An experienced Oxnard school sexual abuse attorney should be contacted.

By the time any teacher or coach is convicted of sexual abuse, there were likely dozens of red flags that were missed. It is also common for there to be multiple victims. When a school district fails to protect students, they can be held accountable. The family of any student that is sexually abused at school may have legal recourse through a civil claim. An Oxnard sexual abuse attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
