CAMARILLO, CALIFORNIA (June 11, 2025) – Camarillo High School wrestling coach Ronald Wilson was arrested on several sexual assault charges, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

Ventura County officials are saying that the defendant was arrested on May 13 in Timnath, Colorado. Ronald Wilson was accused of having a sexual relationship with a minor student at Camarillo High School over a four-year period from 2014-2017.

The assaults allegedly took place both on and off campus. Colorado detectives and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the home of the defendant prior to his arrest.

Ronald Wilson has since been booked into the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office jail. A full investigation into all of the allegations remains ongoing.

Liability for Ventura County Teacher Sexual Abuse

Teachers and coaches occupy a place of great trust in our society. But in far too many circumstances, this trust is abused to sexually exploit children. According to the Journal on Interpersonal Violence, “When considering all adolescents who experienced sexual abuse in their lifetime (10.2%), it appears that 5.3% of them were victims of sexual abuse by a coach. Participants also reported experiencing sexual harassment from a coach (0.4%) and consensual sexual contacts (1.2%) with a coach in the 12 months preceeding the study.” There are a number of reasons that coaches can pose a risk of sexual assault with students.

  • Coaches have a tremendous amount of power and control over the lives of students. They decide who plays, which can affect scholarship opportunities.
  • Coaches routinely have access to students in isolated settings, including locker rooms and one-on-one training sessions.
  • Coaches often operate with minimal oversight from other teachers or school administrators.

Schools have a legal obligation to protect students from foreseeable sources of harm. This includes preventing students from being sexually abused by teachers and coaches. To achieve that end, students must be supervised at all periods of the day. Schools must enforce all rules and regulations necessary for the protection of the children in their care. When a school district fails to adequately supervise students who are abused by coaches, this could form the basis of a negligence claim.

A number of schools have faced lawsuits after students were sexually abused by coaches. Consider, for example, A.H. v. Tamalpais Union High School Dist. A student was sexually abused by his tennis coach at Tamalpais High School. School officials allegedly failed to supervise the coach and did not properly investigate prior complaints against him. The plaintiff was ultimately awarded 10 million after the jury found the school district negligent. Certain steps should be taken after any instance of school sexual abuse involving a coach.

  • The history of misconduct involving the coach should be investigated.
  • The abuse should be reported to the police so that they can conduct a full investigation.
  • Medical records related to the abuse should be collected.
  • All communication between the abuser and the victim should be preserved.
  • An experienced school sexual abuse attorney should be contacted.

Sexual abuse in any school setting is often highly preventable. Part of the problem is that many schools have a culture of silence when it comes to misconduct. Problematic teachers or coaches may be moved from one school district to another where the abuse is allowed to continue. It is important that students and their parents understand that they do have legal options after any instance of sexual abuse. They may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
