Settlement Following a Fatal Beanbag Shotgun Shooting
Carrillo Law Firm, working with co-counsel Arnoldo Casillas, obtained a $3.25 million settlement in litigation arising from the death of Alejandro Campos after a Fullerton police officer shot him with a beanbag shotgun. The encounter occurred outside a McDonald’s restaurant in the early morning of March 6, 2024, after a manager requested assistance with a man acting erratically.
Officers used a Taser and fired five beanbag rounds during an encounter captured on body-worn cameras. The final round penetrated Campos’s chest and caused a fatal injury. His family alleged that, before that final shot, he was standing still with his arms extended and had already been disabled by the earlier rounds. Also, that he was not a threat to anyone and that the use of bean-bag shotgun was not necessary at all.
The case examined the officers’ use of force and the department’s policies and training for beanbag weapons, including the danger of striking the chest. The settlement resolved claims brought by Campos’s son, parents, and estate.
