Arsen Zalyan Shot At By LAPD In North Hollywood

Arsen Zalyan Involved In Los Angeles Police Department Shooting Following Search Warrant At Home on Gilmore Street

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA (September 3, 2024) – A man identified as Arsen Zalyan was shot at by the Los Angeles Police Department at a property on Gilmore Street.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the incident took place around 10:00 a.m. on Monday. The LAPD were called to a home on Gilmore Street to serve a search warrant for illegal cannabis cultivation.

Officers gave verbal commands to exit the house. They then breached the rear gate and entered the yard.

Officers located the man and approached him. He allegedly pointed a rifle-type weapon in the direction of the police, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The LAPD said that Arsen Zalyan was not hit by gunfire and retreated. After a few minutes, he surrendered and was taken into custody.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Los Angeles Police Department Shootings

Police shootings remain alarmingly common in California and across the United States. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, “About 195 people die each year from interactions with California law enforcement. Gunshots are by far the most common cause of death: nearly 250 people are shot by police each year.” Police officers should take a number of measures in order to avoid hurting suspects.

  • Police officers should work to de-escalate encounters.
  • Police officers should be equipped with less-lethal options.
  • Police officers should operate under a use-of-force continuum.

Police officers must always use the least amount of force necessary. According to 42 U.S. Code § 1983, every person who, under the color of law, deprives someone of their rights afforded under the Constitution, shall be liable to the injured party in an action at law. Among other things, every citizen has the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures. A number of steps should be taken after any police shooting.

  • Police officers should work to de-escalate encounters.
  • Police officers should be equipped with less-lethal options.
  • Police officers should operate under a use-of-force continuum.

It can be hard to know where to begin after being injured by the police. In many situations, people may not realize the full extent of their injuries for some time. Sadly, though, police departments will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if they injure suspects or conduct illegal searches. This is why it is so important for victims of police misconduct to seek legal counsel as early as possible.
