SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (March 27, 2024) – A teacher at Mt. Carmel High School in San Diego identified as Stacy Walker has been charged with sexually abusing a minor student.

San Diego County officials are saying that the alleged assaults started in 2017 and continued until 2019. In July, the victim told the San Diego Police Department about the abuse which prompted an investigation.

Stacy Walker was arrested at the end of an eight-month investigation. She was booked into the Las Colinas County Jail. Her bail was set at $150,000. Investigators are seeking witnesses and other possible victims related to this case.

Any person who may have more information about the actions of Stacy Walker should reach out to the San Diego Police Department.

Liability For San Diego County Child Sexual Abuse

Sexual abuse occurs at every stage of the K–12 education system. According to neaToday, “there were 14,938 incidents of sexual violence in K–12 schools in 2017 – 2018 compared with 9,649 in 2015 – 2016, representing a 55 percent increase. These include incidents of rape or attempted rape and sexual assault.” Schools should take a number of measures in order to prevent students from being sexually abused.

  • Schools should make sure that all employees undergo thorough background checks.
  • Schools should understand what factors contribute to sexual victimization and predation.
  • Schools should properly supervise all of the children in their care.

Schools must protect students from foreseeable sources of harm from teachers and third parties. Consider, for example, the landmark case of Dailey v. Los Angeles Unified Sch. Dist. , 2 Cal.3d 741. A 16-year-old died on school grounds after a fight broke out among students during recess. The teacher, who was supposed to monitor the students, instead took a lunch break. Parents of the 16-year-old child that died brought a wrongful death claim against the school district. Evidence was presented at trial that the mere presence of the teacher could have deterred the lethal fight that broke out. It is important that certain steps are taken after any instance of teacher sexual abuse.

  • Any communication involving the teacher and the student should be reviewed.
  • A police report should be created.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • An experienced sexual abuse attorney should be contacted.

There are often very clear signs that a teacher is acting inappropriately with students. In many circumstances, these signs are ignored. This occurs despite the fact that teachers are mandated reporters and have a legal obligation to let police know about reasonably suspected instances of abuse. Any person who is sexually abused by a teacher in California is protected by a number of laws. A teacher sexual abuse attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
